# Edit a contact

> Update fields on an existing contact.

Keep customer details current as you learn more about them.

## Before you start

* The contact already exists

## Steps

  <Step title="Open Contacts">
    Navigate to the contacts module.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the contact">
    Click the contact you want to edit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Edit">
    Switch into edit mode.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Update fields">
    Change name, phone, tags, or any other field.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Confirm the change.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Tips

* Editing a contact does not affect prior chats - those remain attached.
* If the phone number changes, expect a new chat thread to start when the customer next messages.
